Introduction

The ongoing swathe of prosecutions under the Fire Safety Order continue...

On this occasion, a Landlord, Michael Billings from Suffolk, was charged with nine counts of breaching the Fire Safety Order, four counts of breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and one count of breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

The charges followed a fire in which one of Billings’ tenants was severely burned.

HSE Inspector John Claxton said “Landlords have duties under law to maintain their properties and ensure they are safe places for their tenants to live. Michael Billings ignored these duties.”

The Judge sentenced Billings to two-and-a-half year’s imprisonment and ordered him to pay £20,000 in costs.
