One of the UK’s major high street chains,
New Look, were
previously prosecuted following their pleading guilty to two breaches of the
Fire Safety Order, and ordered to pay a record fine of
£400,000 and costs of £136,052. Read more about the prosecution
here.
Not entirely happy with the level of fine, New Look appealed.
The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and in the process set an
important precedent - the key question in deciding the level of fines is
not whether death or serious injury has occurred, but rather the extent
to which a failure to identify and address risk should be punished.

London Fire Brigade’s Press Release.
