Products & Services: Fire-Safety Signage

Introduction

This page aims to provide the reader with a brief overview of our safety signage supplies and services.

Fire-Safety Signage - Legislative Background

Since 1st October 2006, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (“Fire Safety Order”) (for England & Wales) and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 (for Scotland) have been in effect imposing drastic changes to the regulatory regime for fire safety.

Both sets of the legislation above require the legal duty holder (or a third party(ies)) to ensure that signage must be used to indicate any “non-automatic fire-fighting equipment” and emergency routes and exits.

The above legislation reinforces (in very broad terms) the much more detailed legislative requirements that have existed for several years in the form of the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 which still also apply in Great Britain. In addition to stating the requirement for such signage, these regulations also lay down the specific requirements including, colour, need for current-EU style icons (e.g. running-man icon, fire-extinguisher-and-flames icon, etc.), location, maintenance, etc.

Further information on legislation may be found here.

No-Smoking Signage - Legislative Background

Since 26th March 2006, 2nd April 2007 and 1st July 2007 for Scotland, Wales and England (respectively), the effects of the non-smoking provisions of the The Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 and the The Health Act 2005 (for England & Wales) have required the provision of compliant no-smoking signage in smoke-free premises and vehicles.

In addition to providing a useful health benefit, no-smoking signage plays an important part in helping to reduce fire hazards (something often identified in the legally required fire-safety risk assessments).

Further information on legislation may be found here.

Our Safety Signage Surveys

We are able to conduct surveys to help ensure that our customers’ sites have appropriate safety signage that meets the requirements of all of the above legislation.

For more information on the how to ensure one’s compliance with these regulations please click here for our Guidance Sheet.

Our Photoluminescent Safety Signage

Just as with extinguishers, for example, the quality of safety signage varies immensely from source to source. Again, we are committed to supplying some of the very best products available anywhere. For example, our rigid plastic photoluminescent signage has the following features:
  • photoluminescent materials are tested to DIN 67 510 to determine initial intensity and longevity of performance. These tests show that the materials:
    • largely exceed the minimum requirements of the Photoluminescent Safety Products Association (P.S.P.A.) Class I;
    • satisfy the requirements of DIN 67 510 Part 4; and
    • furthermore meet the requirements of P.S.P.A. Class A (Class A specifically responds to the specification of IMO Resolution A.752 (18))
  • Class A product performance criteria gives a high level of luminance for both initial brightness and longevity, offering visible escape route illumination in excess of 5 hours in a blackout situation.

Our General Commitment to Quality

Please refer to the About Us section for a general overview of our commitment to quality.
