Job Description - Introduction

This document is broken down into the following sections:

Fire Alarm & Emergency Lighting Maintenance & Commissioning Engineer.

Role Type

Full time, permanent.

Salary & Benefits

Location

Based from home, located as per role-specific details and typically based near good regional road networks. The employee will ‘cover’ a geographic territory as defined by the Company, and subject to change. Currently, the territory has a ‘weighted-centre’ located where we seek the candidate. The employee will typically be the only Fire Alarm & Emergency Lighting Maintenance & Commissioning Engineer to ‘cover’ this territory.

It is clearly in the Company’s interest for engineers to keep working in their own territories wherever practicable. However, whilst not usually a large part of the job, there may be occasions when it is necessary to work away from home for periods of time. Particular attention is drawn to the early stages of the induction process during which the employee may have to be based away from home Monday to Friday, although rarely for more than three weeks.

Job Purpose

To work within the Anderstore Group in providing and developing its high quality fire protection business.

The employee will contribute by:

  • undertaking the scheduled maintenance of the fire detection and alarm systems and/or emergency lighting systems at our customers’ sites;
  • surveying sites (including in above scheduled maintenance visits) to ensure the adequacy of, or to recommend appropriate new, fire detection and alarm systems and/or emergency lighting systems, or modifications thereof;
  • undertaking modifications and small installations;
  • managing and assisting in larger installations;
  • preparing documentation, as-fitted drawings, zone plans, certification, manuals, etc. for completed works;
  • commissioning and handing over completed installations and modifications;
  • Identifying and making recommendations to address any shortfalls or other customer requirements
  • identifying and maximising sales opportunities, including the securing of the above recommendations;
  • being on-call to provide out-of-hours emergency call-out services at our customers’ sites
  • cross-selling the Group’s other products and services;
  • developing the Group’s business and expanding its customer base; and
  • being accountable for, and ensuring effective self-management, planning and delivery of, the designated workload.

Overview of Key Duties & Responsibilities

Scheduled Maintenance and Site-Surveying

  • Attending the sites of our customers and prospective customers, typically a mix of most types of commercial premises (offices, shops, factories, warehouses, sleeping accommodation, places of assembly, healthcare premises, transport premises and facilities, animal premises and facilities, etc.).
  • Maintaining fire alarm and/or emergency lighting installations in accordance with the applicable standards, manufacturers’ guidance, legislation, etc. as above. This maintenance includes the regular scheduled maintenance, unscheduled maintenance and fault-finding.
  • Comprehensively surveying such sites to ensure their safety, the adequacy of their fire alarm and/or emergency lighting installations, and their compliance with the relevant British Standards (including BS 5839 part 1 for fire alarms and BS 5266 part 1 for emergency lighting), manufacturers’ guidance, legislation (including the Fire Safety Order (or, for Scotland, the Fire (Scotland) Act, and associated regulations)), etc.
  • This aspect of the role involves the use of basic numeracy skills including:
    • the application of simple formulas;
    • the calculation of floor areas;
    • the calculation of travel distances;
    • using tables to lookup values; and
    • basic arithmetic (completing prices, quantities, totals, etc.).
  • Ensuring the health and safety of themselves and others.
  • Be aware of, and have regard for, trade-related environmental issues.
  • Being on-call out of normal working to provide out-of-hours emergency call-out services at our customers’ sites in accordance with the applicable standards, manufacturers’ guidance, legislation, etc. as above. Whilst typical on-call times are far lower (we currently outsource much of this), Fire Alarm & Emergency Lighting Maintenance & Commissioning Engineer may be expected to be on-call up to one week in every two. Such periods include out of normal working hours such as overnight, weekends and holidays including Christmas and the new year.

Works Management

  • Designing small installations and assisting in the design of larger installations;
  • Where applicable, organising pre-install meetings to help ensure a smooth, quality process and to identify and secure any further opportunities, such as other works needed.
  • Managing installations of, and Installing, fire alarm and/or emergency lighting installations and modifications, both large (less frequently) and small, in accordance with the applicable standards, manufacturers’ guidance, legislation, etc. as above.
  • Testing and commissioning above systems;
  • Preparing all necessary documentation, certification, operation and maintenance ("O&M") manuals, drawings (including as-fitted drawings and zone-charts), etc.;
  • Formally handing over the systems;
  • being the first point of contact with the customer and helping to ensure customer satisfaction.

Provision and Delivery of the Group’s other Products & Services

  • Where deemed so appropriate by the Company:
    • surveying, making recommendations, quoting, etc. in accordance with the applicable legislation, guidance and standards for the Group’s other products and services.
    • providing, delivering, fitting, etc. those products and services.
  • Examples may include:
    • surveying, supplying and installing safety signage;
    • recommending where appropriate the provision of staff training;
    • delivering such staff training, typically to groups of no larger than roughly twelve in size;
  • Working with the Group to develop, recommend and provide new products and services.

Sales & Business Development

  • Maximise sales opportunities arising from the site-surveying and equipment servicing. Examples of such sales include replacement or additional fire detectors, call points, emergency lights, recalibration services, spare parts and signage.
  • Cross-selling of the Group’s other products and services during servicing and survey visits. Examples of such products and services include fire extinguishers and their maintenance, fire training and fire-safety risk assessments.
  • Developing the Group’s business and expanding its customer base through identifying, marketing and selling all of the Group’s products and services to new and prospective customers.
  • To achieve key performance indicator (KPI) objectives set by the Company.
  • Further the Group’s reputation and trade-standing through professionalism, good-practice and ethical selling techniques.

Team Working

  • To communicate and work effectively within the Anderstore team.
  • To positively contribute in Anderstore team development initiatives and operations. Whether by mentoring, leading, listening or by just being involved.
  • To maintain flexibility and liaise with the team with regards to service cover (including providing some out-of-hours and out-of-area cover).
  • To provide mentorship and peer-support to other team members where appropriate.
  • Communicating/Liaising with appropriate staff re time-management.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of team objectives in line with the Company policy.
  • To work alongside other senior members of the team in aiming to ensure that service delivery is of high quality and is evaluated appropriately.

Self-Management

  • To organise their workload on an appropriate basis in an optimal manner maximising productive time, and minimising avoidable wastage such as unproductive time, unnecessary travel, costs, etc.
  • To manage their own working hours, keep appropriate records and answer any queries as may be required to help ensure that the employee visibly fulfils his or her own working time obligations.
  • Managing stock demands, requisitions and orders for such works.
  • To closely measure and monitor the employee’s own performance and to work toward achieving their own goals along with any other goals, objectives or KPIs set by the Company.
  • To maintain a smart and professional appearance, to wear the Company uniform and to adhere to any appearance policies at all times.
  • To properly, efficiently and safely look after, manage and organise any Company property provided to, or used by, the employee in the course of his job. Most notably, this includes any depots or Company premises, the van, tools and stock.

Communication

  • Communicate professionally, effectively and empathically with customers and prospective customers. To deliver on promises and be an ambassador for the Company.
  • To ensure neat, accurate and properly completed documentation of customer and other records and that appropriate customer and other information is communicated to the Company.
  • To ensure confidentiality.

Quality

  • To work to, and to maintain an up-to-date awareness of relevant British Standards (particularly BS 5839 part 1 and BS 5266 part 1), manufacturers’ guidance and legislation (including the Fire Safety Order (or, for Scotland, the Fire (Scotland) Act, and associated regulations)), etc.
  • Ideally holding/obtaining at least some of the following qualifications and/or training:
    • FIA or BFPSA fire alarm qualifications, especially unit 5;
    • FIA/ICEL emergency light maintenance qualifications; and
    • ideally (although not essentially) also BS 7671 electrical qualifications including:
      • City & Guilds 2330 (on or after 2009) or equivalent; or
      • a combination of:
        • City & Guilds 2330 (before 2009), 236 Parts 1 and 2 or equivalent; and
        • City & Guilds 2382-10, 2382-20 or 2382-12.
  • Attend technical training courses, seminars and other events as may be required by the Company in order to help maintain technical skills and product awareness.
  • Contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the service through yearly reports, user surveys, audits, etc.
  • To work within the Company’s quality auditing and management policies, guidelines, protocols and procedures.
  • Participate in effective supervision.
  • To maintain own professional development.
  • Promote the Company’s commitment to quality.

General

  • To promptly and properly assist the office and management in their queries or reasonable requests for assistance (including in the settling of queries, investigations, etc., assistance in the collection of outstanding accounts, including the making of witness statements and the attending of court hearings where so required).
  • Perform such other duties and exercise such powers and functions as may from time to time be reasonably assigned to or vested in him or her.
  • Any other duties or responsibilities as per contract.
  • Unless otherwise specified in any subsequent contract, the normal hours of work are on-site between 8.30a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on Mondays to Fridays, with one hour for lunch subject to the Company’s rules and policies, including any relating to flexibility.
  • Some working outside of normal hours may also be necessary as set out above and, for example, to cover the specific requirements of the Group’s customers such as those requiring evening and weekend access, etc.

Responsible To

This position is line-managed by the nominated manager.

Additionally, the position has responsibility to the Company’s head office management.
