The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (“UKAS”) is the sole national accreditation body recognised by the UK Government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.
UKAS is a non-profit-distributing company, limited by guarantee, and operates under a Memorandum of Understanding between UKAS and the UK Government through the
DTI’s Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.

In UKAs’ own words, “[a]ccreditation by UKAS demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance capability of…evaluators”. As the sole national accreditation body recognised by the UK Government, one should raise fundamental questions of any certification of quality by a body that is not UKAS-accredited.
